Search for an NMC approved university for MBBS abroad, and you’ll find the phrase everywhere. It sounds official. It isn’t.

NMC doesn’t publish or endorse any list of NMC approved colleges abroad. If an agent uses that exact phrase, it’s worth questioning everything else they’ve told you.

What “NMC Approved University” Actually Means — Nothing

NMC’s own study-abroad guidance page states plainly that it does not endorse any list of foreign medical institutions for MBBS. There is no current approved list, and there never was one in the way agents imply.

So when you hear “NMC recognized university” or “NMC approved medical university,” treat it as a sales phrase, not a verified fact.

What NMC Actually Does Instead

NMC doesn’t approve foreign universities in advance. It sets the rules a foreign degree must meet to count in India, under the FMGL Regulations, 2021:

At least 54 months of academic study
A 12-month internship at the same institution
Fully English-medium instruction
In-person clinical training

NMC checks your eligibility against these rules later. It never certifies a university up front.

How to Actually Verify a University

Three checks matter more than any “approved” label:

FMGL 2021 compliance — ask for this in writing, not verbally.
NMC’s current advisory list — a short list of universities NMC has formally warned against.
The World Directory of Medical Schools — a real, independent reference for recognized medical schools.
Universities NMC Has Formally Warned Against

As of NMC’s most recent advisory, these institutions are flagged:

Central American Health and Sciences University, Belize
Columbus Central University, Belize
Washington University of Health and Sciences, Belize
Chirchik Branch of Tashkent State Medical University, Uzbekistan
Bukhara State Medical Institute, Uzbekistan
Samarkand State Medical University, Uzbekistan
TIT Institute of Medical Sciences, Bangalore (offshore campus)

This list changes. Always check nmc.org.in directly before enrolling — don’t rely on any blog, including this one, as your final check.

Why These Universities Were Flagged

The reasons repeat across advisories:

Enrolling students beyond sanctioned intake capacity
Poor infrastructure or weak clinical exposure
Harassment of Indian students
Excessive fees with no refund on withdrawal
Three Red Flags When a University Is Sold to You
“NMC approved” used as a selling point. This alone should raise a question.
No written FMGL 2021 confirmation. A genuine university can show you this in writing.
No named teaching hospital. If an agent can’t name it, ask why.
How Leobiss Verifies Every University

We check every university we recommend against NMC’s current advisories and FMGL 2021 criteria before shortlisting it. We never describe a university as “NMC approved,” because that phrase isn’t accurate for anyone to use.
